Create a Work Space: Your writing workspace should be just like your space at a regular 9-5. It should have minimum distractions, be well-organized and about you. If you work best to the sounds gangsta' rap and country (I do!) then get Pandora pumping! If you work best with a cup of coffee and silence then perk away and shut out all noise!
Search for Writing Jobs Everyday: Let your blog or freelance business writing site just lay for now. Don't go back and post something because you think that someone will see it in the next 5 minutes and offer you a job. There should be a time to market yourself and it shouldn't be ALL THE TIME! You need to write everyday and find work every day! Get on the sites that you write for now and pick up jobs! Bid at jobs on the bidding sites! Do it! It will pay off and you'll be building a steady income and showcasing your work.
Make Money from your Writing Every Day: Sometimes people forget about this. Make sure that your keeping those sites that you write for busy! Write and submit something every day that is going to bring in money! I always try to keep my writing sites working one way or the other even if it is a minimal, penny per word submission. It adds up!
Deliver Good Quality Content: The key…the secret…the obvious. Without good content people won't come back! You'll get canned! Do your homework, write, revise and edit. Know the keywords and why they are relevant. Do your own keyword analysis and provide some insight to your clients. Always do what they request-but many will appreciate an outside view!
Stay off of Facebook, Twitter and Your Blog: I know I mentioned it in the second tip but it is worth repeating! I say this because I fall into this trap as well as many other freelance writers. Just writing this post I received several Tweets, IM's, a phone call and checked my blog twice! What could have been 15 minutes of work took me 30 minutes. Remember, there is a time to market and there is a time to write!
